Materials

Counters or unlit matches, Container, Timer

Facilitator & access notes

Use counters rather than lit matches. Time is estimated and depends on the discussion; avoid treating the counters as a measure of someone’s value.

How to facilitate it

  1. Agree a topic, a discussion window and the same small number of counters for everyone.
  2. Ask participants to surrender one counter each time they contribute.
  3. When someone has used their allowance, ask them to listen until others have had their opportunities; agree beforehand whether counters can be shared.
